dRISK
dRISK is solving the last remaining roadblock standing in the way of commercially viable autonomous vehicles – edge cases. Edge cases are the countless high-risk scenarios which are individually unlikely, but together make up all the risk on the road. For AVs to become a commercial reality, AV developers are realizing that their systems must be tested on orders of magnitude more edge cases than are in any single aggregated data set. To solve this dRISK has built an edge case taxonomy from a large and heterogeneous data sources focused on high risk -- more than a million hours of proprietary and public CCTV footage trained on high-risk intersections, hundreds of thousands of full-text accident reports, and extensive expert input from both transportation specialists and NASA experts in failure mode analysis.
These edge cases are then clustered and organized so as to ensure comprehensive coverage of the risk space and eliminate testing bias, and redeployed either as raw sensor data or in sensor-realistic simulation for nearly any configuration of AV sensors. Using the dRISK API, customers can train, test and validate the AV stack to achieve a step-change in performance and safety. The technology can also be used for a high-resolution risk assessment of the operational domain (OD). dRISK is partly funded by a major grant from the UK's Department for Transport, with a mandate to deliver the first true driver's test for the self driving car. dRISK’s customers include several of the world’s foremost AV developers, as well as internationally recognized transport authorities and insurers.
